I have mine in the middle of my base too. Only time will tell if it works well or not.
The way I see it, if you have the silo off to one edge, then attackers will just work from the opposite edge. Either that, or your silo won't be covered by the turrets and bunkers very well, and they will take out the silo first.
I think a lot of it will depend on players style, and the units they have at their disposal.
